Vagiannis Vasilis was born in October 1952 in Mytilene, specifically in Mesagros, a place of exceptional natural beauty, with olive groves and a view over the serene Gulf of Gera. His childhood years, deeply connected to the Greek landscape, shaped from an early age his aesthetic sensibility and spiritual identity.
Growing up in an environment where nature, history, and culture coexisted harmoniously, he developed a strong inclination toward painting from a very young age. His first works were created on shells, wood, and cardboard, already revealing his need for artistic expression.
At a young age, he moved with his family to Athens. After completing his secondary education, he went to Paris, where he studied Physics, Chemistry, and Ecology, while simultaneously attending courses at the School of Fine Arts, systematically cultivating his artistic talent.
His first solo exhibition took place in Paris in 1974, marking the beginning of a long and dynamic artistic career. Since then, he has presented his work in approximately fifty solo exhibitions in Greece and abroad, including the United States (New York, Washington, Detroit), Canada (Toronto), Germany (Düsseldorf, Stuttgart, Frankfurt), the United Kingdom, France, and Cyprus, while also participating in numerous group exhibitions.
Alongside his painting activity, he has been involved in scenography, curating stage designs for performances and artistic events in France, Greece, and Cyprus. His work has received positive critical acclaim and has been widely featured in the press, on radio, and on television. Furthermore, he has been included in important art encyclopedias, among them the publication “Greek Painters.”
In 2003, he officially became a member of the Chamber of Fine Arts of Greece, with the approval of the Ministry of Culture.
His artistic creation is characterized by thematic diversity and strong introspection. His works include landscapes, seascapes, human figures, and abstract compositions. Surrealist elements hold a prominent place, rendered in a dreamlike and symbolic manner. His influences derive from Greek nature, mythology, Byzantine tradition, history, as well as from the poetry of Greek creators.
Having traveled to more than thirty countries, including China, Mexico, Egypt, India, Nepal, Switzerland, and the Netherlands, he enriched his visual language and broadened the horizons of his artistic expression.
For Vassilis Vagiannis, painting is not merely an art form, but a way of being and expressing.
He lives and works in Marousi.
